It is a gentle 16 kilometre journey through the fiord waters before reaching the open sea. The road to Milford Sound is thought to be one of the world's finest alpine drives.

The Doubtful Sound is known as the fiord of serene silence. The deepest of the fiords it is approximately 40 kilometres from open waters showcasing a number of amazing waterfalls and animals on the way. You can experience these unique natural marvels by cruise or kayak, with a tour or at your own leisure.

The town Te Anau offers a range of services to visitors and is the closest base to the Milford Sound. Te Anau, bordered by lush forests and a beautiful lake, is the departure point for walking, boat and horse riding tours around the area. The town's glow-worm caves are also a popular attraction for travellers.

The other township, Manapouri is a peaceful and quiet spot. This is home to the deepest lake in New Zealand, Lake Manapouri. The town has a stunning landscape including native bushlands and the Cathedral Mountain range.

Activities in Fiordland are largely nature based due to the amazing surroundings. Popular activities include bush walking, boating, horse treks, jet boating, scenic flights, diving, fishing and more.
