Surrounded by spectacular natural features including the Tongariro National Park and the Whanganui River, the Ruapehu district is an explorer's dream destination.
Tongariro National Park, one of the key highlights of the region, was given to the country as a gift from the Ngati Tuwharetoa people. Covering approximately 800 square kilometres, the park incorporates the towering volcanoes Ruapehu, Ngauruhose and Tongariro. These magnificent formations and the surrounding area provide the perfect spot for exploration all year round.
Another popular attraction in the region is the Whanganui National Park. Home to an array of native flora and fauna, the park features beautiful rivers, deep gorges and sparkling waterfalls. With a rich history dating back to a time of steamboats and water-driven flour mills, this river was once the main route into the inland reaches of the North Island.
Whakapapa and Turoa on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu are popular for skiing, snow boarding and tobogganing. These slopes have areas that cater to people of all skill levels. The ski season varies depending on snowfall but you can generally expect it to begin early July and finish early October. While in the area you can also enjoy hiking, fishing, horse riding, kayaking and much much more.
The Ruapehu National Park, Taumarunui, Ohakune and Waiouru are the main settlement towns in the region. The National Park and Ohakune are predominantly ski towns, Waiouru is an army town and Taumarunui is the service centre for the rural community.
