Te Anau

Te Anau is a town in the Fiordland region of the South Island, New Zealand. It is located on the edge of New Zealand's second largest lake, Lake Te Anau.

Te Anau has many popular outdoor activities for travellers including hiking, lake cruising, kayaking and exploring the local Glowworm caves. As well as outdoor activities there are some great locations such as the museum which has a collection of both the Maori and European history of the area and the wildlife park which specialises in native birds.

There is a wide range of affordable accommodation from farmstays to hotels. Local cafes and restaurants offer a variety of dining options, from fish and chips to fine dining, and the opportunity to sample local seafood.

Te Anau has some great shopping facilities such as high quality apparel, gift and souvenir shops, many selling New Zealand wool and sheepskin products and garments.

Te Anau History

Captain Cook and his crew were the first Europeans to visit Fiordland in 1773 Cook's maps and descriptions soon attracted sealers and whalers who formed the first European settlements of New Zealand. From the middle of the 19th century, surveyors, explorers and prospectors began to enter of Fiordland including Te Anau.
