Rakiura National Park is the 14th of New Zealand's national parks and it is located on New Zealand's Stewart Island also known as Rakiura. It covers around 157,000 hectares and makes up about 85 percent of Stewart Island/Rakiura.
Rakiura National Park includes a network of former nature reserves, scenic reserves, and state forest areas. Visitors can travel around pristine beaches, sheltered inlets, and coastal forest, and see seals, penguins, kiwi, weka and many other birds.
Visitors will enjoy the many chances they have for hunting, fishing, boating, cruises and scenic flights. Night time is very special in Rakiura National Park as nocturnal bird life provides an unforgettable chorus. You'll hear the calls of ruru (the native owl), weka and kiwi.
Rakiura National Park History
Rakiura National Park opened in 2002. Rakiura translates to 'the Land of Glowing Skies', a name that refers to both the beautiful night-sky phenomenon called the Aurora Australis (the Southern Lights) and the breathtaking sunsets that burn on the western horizon.
