Queenstown

Queenstown is a resort town in the south-west of the South Island, New Zealand. It is built around Queenstown Bay on Lake Wakatipu and set in the magnificent landscapes of the Southern Alps.

Queenstown has a fantastic landscape and scenery. It has rugged mountains, majestic lakes, crystal clear air, and just so much to do.

It is a town that is famous for adventure. There are adventure activities for anyone of any age, with any fitness level, including snowboarding, skiing, bungy jumping, jet boating, horse trekking and river rafting.

There are also some indulgent and relaxing experiences such as exceptional food and wine, lake cruises, spa treatments, boutique shopping and leisurely games of golf.

There are also sophisticated wine bars, live jazz, top DJ's and more than 160 licensed bars and cafes in downtown Queenstown which are open all week.

Queenstown is a destination for all seasons. Winter is delightful with snow-capped mountains and blue skies. Spring has some beautiful, fresh days and cool evenings, punctuated by spring showers. In summer there are warm days ideal for outdoor fun in the sun and autumn is still warm with occasional hot spots and balmy evenings.

Queenstown History

William Gilbert Rees and Nicholas Von Tunzelman were the first Europeans to settle the area. Rees was looking for pastoral land, and after an initial visit returned in 1860 to establish a high country farm in the location of Queenstown's current town centre.

In 1862, two sheep shearers struck it rich at the edge of the Shotover River. The ensuing gold rush town was named Queenstown because '...it was fit for Queen Victoria'.
