Punakaiki

Punakaiki is a small community on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand, it is located around halfway between Westport and Greymouth.

Punakaiki is located very closely to a lot of tourist attractions such as the amazing Pancake Rocks and blowholes and The Paparoa National Park, which is full of secret caves, disappearing streams and river gorges.

There are many other great activities in Punakaiki: walk one of the many sub-tropical rainforest and coastal tracks, take a horse trek through the scenic landscapes, paddle the Pororari River by canoe or watch a spectacular West Coast sunset.

There is an array of accommodation available, from hostels and homestays to self-contained cottages; there's also a choice of eating places and galleries. There are plenty of chances to get outdoors visitors can go swimming, surfing, fishing, and kayaking or rock climbing, bouldering and caving in the limestone formations.

Punakaiki History

Maori travellers knew it as a great place to pamper the puku, the tummy. Punakaiki literally means "a spring of food". Later came gold seekers, headed by the Sams Party (Black Sam, White Sam, French Sam and another Sam).
