Picton

Picton is a picturesque seaside town in the Marlborough region of New Zealand. It is located at the top of the South Island near the head of Queen Charlotte Sound.

Picton is the South Island base for the ferry service that links the North to the South. It's also the gateway to the marine, forest and island attractions of the Marlborough Sounds.

Discover some of New Zealand's most stunning scenery and choose from a great selection of activities and attractions such as cruising, fishing, dolphin watching or sea kayaking and visit the floating maritime museum and aquarium. The Queen Charlotte Track is a major local attraction; which can be done on foot or on a mountain bike.

Picton has a beautiful seafront filled with cafes, restaurants and various types of galleries. Picton's High Street, running up from the foreshore, has a fine selection of gift shops and offers a great shopping experience.

Picton History

In 1848 a Maori settlement on the site was occupied by Governor Sir George Grey and Francis Dillon Bell, of the New Zealand Company. They proceeded to lay out the village of Newton, which was renamed in 1859 to honour Sir Thomas Picton, a commander under the Duke of Wellington in the Peninsular War.
