Paparoa National Park
PAPAROA NATIONAL PARK ACTIVITIES AND TRAVEL | Paparoa National Park Information
Paparoa National Park is situated in the northern part of the West Coast in the South Island, New Zealand. It is between the towns of Westport and Greymouth.
Paparoa National Park is well known for the Pancake Rocks and blowholes of Dolomite Point, near the little settlement of Punakaiki. Copious coastal forest, limestone cliffs and canyons, caves and underground streams and an absolutely spectacular coastline, are all in this fascinating National Park.
By following the historic Inland Pack Track, visitors can experience some of the park's most special places. Camping under the Ballroom Overhang which is a natural rock shelter is a memorable experience.
Limestone lies beneath most of the park, and is responsible for the area's impressive landforms. The park is the overlapping point between subtropical and cool climate trees. There is also an abundance of birdlife in Paparoa National Park. The common Westland Black Petrel breeds only on the Punakaiki coast, and the Great Spotted Kiwi explores the forest by night.
Paparoa National Park History
The Paparoa National Park was created in 1987, to protect a unique limestone karst environment from mining and forestry.
