Owaka is a small town in the Otago region of the South Island, New Zealand. It is the largest community in the Catlins area. It is located around 35 kilometres south of Balclutha.
Owaka has everything a small town needs such as a doctor, pharmacy, grocery store, internet cafe, craft shops and an assortment of accommodation. A place to visit is the Catlins Historical Museum which focuses on family life in southland over the last 100 years.
Other nearby attractions include the striking Purakaunui Falls; Pounawea which is a great place for bird watching; the fur seal colony at Nugget Point; Jack's Blowhole, where a large sea cave has collapsed to leave a deep sea-filled hole in the middle of a field; and the sea lions of Cannibal Bay.
Owaka History
Owaka was established by pioneers in the late 1800s. The town's name comes from the Maori for "the place of canoes", a reference to the town's location close to the Owaka River. The town was originally called Catlins River, then Quakerfield.
