Nelson is a city that lays on the southern shore of Tasman Bay, at the northern end of the South Island, New Zealand. It is the administrative centre of the Nelson region.
Nelson is New Zealand's largest fishing port and the gateway to a major forestry and horticulture industry. Inland Nelson is great place for outdoor adventure especially on the water such as kayaking, fishing, rafting, and boating. Other activities include skydiving, rock climbing, 4WD biking, horse treks and sailing charters.
In winter skiing and ice skating make the Nelson Lakes a popular destination. The area is has beautiful luxury lodges hidden away among mountains, lakes and exotic native bush settings.
The city attracts creative people who work with all kinds of material such as glass, metal, stone, wood, clay, sand, paper, ink, paint and fabric. Nelson provides the chance for visitors to appreciate New Zealand art, both in galleries and in artists' studios.
There are many great locations that are easily accessible from Nelson. Visit the many wineries scattered around the nearby Moutere Hills and the Waimea Plains or check out the natural wonders in the area such as the Waikoropupu Springs which holds the world record for the clarity of their fresh water, Harwood's Hole, which is New Zealand's deepest vertical shaft at 357 metres and the unique Farewell Spit where over 100 species of birds visit each year.
Nelson History
Settlement of Nelson began about 700 years ago by Maori. It is believed the earliest settlements in New Zealand were around the Nelson-Marlborough regions. The earliest recorded tribe in the Nelson district are the Ngati Kuia, Ngati Tumatakokiri, Ngati Apa and Rangitane tribes.
