Motueka is a town which lies close to the mouth of the Motueka River, on the western shore of Tasman Bay in the South Island of New Zealand. It is the third largest centre in the Tasman Region after Nelson and Richmond.
The long summer days and mild winters attract many people to the town especially over the harvest months. The local pip fruit and hops growers employ seasonal labour which increases the population, and many visitors use the town as a supply point to explore the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks.
Motueka has plenty of exciting and interesting places to visit such as a small museum and an abundance of interesting places to eat; you can even dine in a converted church in the main street. Motueka also has an energetic artistic community, so the art and craft galleries are worth seeing. You will also have all the amenities you need including supermarkets, an extensive array of shops and amazing cafes.
To get outdoors try taking a stroll along the waterfront walkway, or drive to where the river emerges from a marble cave at the Riwaka Resurgence.
Motueka History
The conquest by the North Island Chief Te Rauparaha and his forces happened just a few years before Frenchman Dumont D'Urville explored the coastline in 1827. A lot of the Abel Tasman National Park coastline still has the names that D'Urville bestowed upon it. The history of European settlement dates from 1842 when the town was surveyed off.
