Methven

Methven is a small town in the Canterbury region of the South Island, New Zealand. It is located 35 kilometres north of Ashburton and one and a half hours inland from Christchurch.

Methven is a great town for visitors looking for adventure. In winter, it's a great base for snow sport fans as it's within close distance of nine Canterbury ski fields, including the majestic Mt Hutt.

Outside of winter other outdoor activities are popular such as jet boating, sky diving, hot air balloon rides and mountain biking. Methven is also surrounded by some great locations for fishing or a round of golf and has a superb choice of restaurants, cafes and bars. Accommodation varies from backpacker lodges to B & B's.

Methven History

It was originally the railhead of a short branch railway off the Main South Line. Branching off from Rakaia, the Methven Branch travelled through Lauriston and Lyndhurst to Methven and operated from 1880 until 1976.
