Hokitika

Hokitika is a town in the West Coast Region of the South Island, New Zealand; it is located 40 kilometres south of Greymouth.

There is so much to see and do in Hokitika visitors can Visit the museum and delve into the history of the coast, see live kiwi at The National Kiwi Centre, visit the award winning Seaforth Gardens or carve your very own treasure at Bonz & Stonz and enjoy an afternoon paddle boat cruise on serene Mahinupua waterways.

Hokitika has some exquisite old buildings on the town's historic walk. There are also numerous galleries specialising in pounamu (greenstone) jewellery and art works. Gold jewellers, wood turners and potters provide other souvenir opportunities.

Hokitika History

Hokitika was originally settled in 1860, after the discovery of gold on the West Coast. Founded on gold mining in 1864, it was a centre of the West Coast goldrush.
