Hanmer Springs

Hanmer Springs is a small resort town in the Canterbury region of the South Island, New Zealand; it is situated under two hour's drive from Christchurch and Kaikoura.

Hanmer Springs is a great year-round holiday destination for adventure, relaxation and indulgence. Its main attraction is its Thermal Pools and Spa facility which has seven open air thermal pools, three sulphur pools, four private thermal pools and spa treatments as well as hydro slides and swimming pools for kids.

Other local activities give you the chance to experience Hanmer Springs' striking environment such as forest hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, skiing, bungy jumping and jet boating. There's also an up to date shopping centre and plenty of choices for meals and accommodation.

Hanmer Springs History

The town is built around a popular hot spring which was discovered in the late 19th century. The hot springs were produced by the fractured rock bed along the Hanmer fault.

The Maori were the first to discover the thermal springs when passing through the South Island but there was never a permanent Maori settlement in the area.

In 1883 the Government Lands Departments took over development of the Thermal Pools area and began the wonderful history of what is today a multi-award winning tourist attraction.
