Greymouth

Greymouth is the largest town in the West Coast region of the South Island, New Zealand, it is a 30 minute drive to Moana and a 38 minute drive to Hokitika.

Greymouth has a history of gold mining, which can be appreciated at the local museum and nearby Shantytown. Shantytown has over 30 historic buildings that make up the recreated 19th Century pioneer town; there you can ride the steam train, go gold panning, and have an old time portrait taken as a memento of your visit.

The local brewery is also a must-see and something of a New Zealand legend; it runs tours that include a tasting session. There is a number of other attractions in Greymouth that are great all year round they include sea fishing, fly fishing, a quayside walk and hiking the Elizabeth Track, which passes through a scenic reserve and old goldmining sites.

Around the town you'll also find galleries specialising in pounamu (New Zealand jade). Greymouth is a great location to visit and it is the ideal base for activities on the Coast due to its central location.

Greymouth History

Once the site of the Maori pa Mawhera, In January 1848 on a visit to Mawhera, Thomas Brunner journeyed up the river which he named the Grey River to honour the then Governor of New Zealand, Sir George Grey. In 1868 the town took the name Greymouth from its situation at the mouth of the Grey River.
