Gore is a rural service town in the Southland region of the South Island, New Zealand; it is located 64 kilometres northeast of Invercargill and 70 kilometres west of Balclutha.
Gore is a perfect destination, there is a stunning landscape with the Hokonui Hills as a backdrop and peony roses, rhododendrons, roses, magnolias and bulbs all relish in the Southland conditions and produce top class quality displays not found in any other areas of New Zealand.
If you like to flick a fly rod this is a great location for you, spring and early summer are the best times to catch a brown trout from the Mataura River, there are also many other useful streams close by. A visit to the Hokonui Moonshine Museum is a must to learn about the area's history of illicit whisky distilling.
As well as all of this Gore also has a huge array of accommodation, restaurants, bars and activities on offer.
Gore History
Gore takes its name from the Governor of New Zealand from 1855 to 1861, Colonel Thomas Gore-Browne. Modern history of the area dates from 1836 when the southern Maori repelled a raid from the north, allowing purchase and occupation by settlers to follow.
