Glenorchy is a small rustic town nestled at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu in the South Island of New Zealand; it is approximately 45 kilometres from Queenstown.
Glenorchy has a scenic background of native beech forest and tall snow-capped mountains. The village charms all visitors with its many attractions such as horse trekking along the river flats, strolling along the many walking tracks including Routeburn, Caples, Greenstone, Rees and Dart Valley and it's also the place to organise jet boating and kayaking on the Dart River.
The town also has a variety of lodges, one hotel and a few cosy cafes. Take a scenic flight and experience Glenorchy from the air and travel into unexplored wilderness. Fishing for quinnat salmon is also a favourite pastime for visitors and residents of the area.
The Glenorchy/Paradise area is a star of the Lord of the Rings movies. The stunning locations of Lothlorien, Amon Hen, Orthanc, and Isengard are all in this region.
Glenorchy History
In the beginning, Glenorchy was a 'summer camp' for Maori who travelled from the West Coast in order to collect greenstone from the Dart River. In the 1860's, Glenorchy was home to European settlers, who grazed sheep in the area, milled timber and created scheelite mining industries.
