D'Urville Island is an island in the Marlborough region along the northern coast of the South Island, New Zealand.
D'Urville Island is a breathtaking island, whether you arrive by road or by sea, you'll be surrounded by spectacular Marlborough Sounds scenery. D'Urville's native forest is lively with tui, bellbirds, native robins, weka and kaka and is possum-free. The surrounding sea is just as populated, with dolphins, seals, seabirds and plenty of fish.
There are plenty of walking tracks with amazing views through rainforests, waterfalls and river pools. Mountain bikes are welcome on the tracks as well. If you're staying on the island, expect a real nature wakeup call at dawn.
D'Urville Island History
D'Urville Island was named after the French explorer Jules Dumont d'Urville. The Māori name is Rangitoto Ki Te Tonga. The island is separated from the mainland by the dangerous French Pass, Several vortices occur near this passage. D'Urville investigated the passage for several days in 1827, and damaged his ship passing through it.
