Arrowtown

Arrowtown is a historic gold mining town in the Otago region of the South Island, New Zealand. Arrowtown is located on the banks of the Arrow River, 20 minutes drive from Queenstown.

Arrowtown is a sophisticated town with a lot of local attractions including fine clothing stores, art studios and galleries, outstanding cafes and restaurants, unique accommodation and traditional pubs and boutique bars.

It is located in a region that is full of adventure and excitement, snow enthusiasts will enjoy being in close proximity to six superb snow sport areas and the town is a golf lover's paradise as there is three superb golf courses.

Arrowtown is also famous for its broad range of historic and recreational walking trails ranging from a stroll around the river to half and full day hikes, they include the Arrow River Trail, Macetown Walking Track, Tobins Track, Lake Hayes Walk and a track to the historic Chinese Village.

Arrowtown was also a location for some filming of the Lord of the Rings. The gushing Arrow River and its bush-clad walkways is an internationally preferred site for filming of movies and commercials. It's also a photographer's dream. The town still retains its historic character from the 19th century as there are more than 60 restored buildings.

Two years after the first European settlers established high country farms in the Wakatipu area, gold was discovered in nearby rivers. The find was concealed for a short time, but news soon spread. In 1862 Jack Tewa, a shearer working for William Rees, had found gold in the Arrow River.
