Akaroa is a village town on the Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region of the South Island, New Zealand, it sits at the edge of a gorgeous harbour inside the eroded crater of a huge extinct volcano.

Akaroa has its own beautiful bays and harbour and is rich with French and English history, the streets have French names and local restaurants focus on French cuisine.

It is a small town but there are a lot of attractions and activities that visitors will thoroughly enjoy. There are plenty of opportunities to go sailing, swimming and to see Hector's dolphins, penguins and fur seals on a harbour cruise.

Akaroa is also rich in history and Arts and Crafts. Visit the Akaroa museum and take a self-guided walk to see historic cottages or experience the 'Little River Art Gallery' as you drive through Little River.

Shopping in Akaroa is so easy you can walk from one end to the other in 15 minutes, the shops include some beautiful local boutiques, unique craft shops and for those with a sweet tooth the local gift and souvenir shop is a great place to get fresh Cream and Butter fudge that is absolutely delicious and some of the best fudge in New Zealand.

Akaroa History

The French settlers who arrived to establish the town in 1840 thought they were the first colonists of a new French territory, however the Treaty of Waitangi was signed just days before they arrived, which gave Britain power over the whole of New Zealand.
