Whangamata is a town on the southeast coast of the Coromandel Peninsula in the North Island, New Zealand. It is 30 kilometres north of Waihi, to the north of the Bay of Plenty.
Whangamata is famous for its unique combination of beach and rainforest, its remarkable ocean beach offers some of the best surfing breaks and the safest swimming in the country. Big game fishing is also very popular and found further off the coast.
The Coromandel Forest Park and Tairua Forest flanking the town provide many great outdoor experiences such as short walks, mountain bike trails and old gold mining sites. Whangamata has one of the best shopping centres in the region, a unique culture and a range of sporting facilities from golf to swimming.
Places and experiences such as Opoutere beach, mountain biking, Luck at Last Mine, Onemana beach, Tuhua (Mayor) Island, Whiritoa beach, Whangamata Craft Trail and Wentworth Valley attract many visitors to Whangamata.
Whangamata History
People first started to filter into the Whangamata area after the gold strikes in Thames and Waihi, in the mid 1800's, the Government did not officially open the area until 1873. The 1890's to 1920's saw intense activity rise as gold mining in the Wentworth, Wharekawa and Parakawai Valleys developed establishing settlements of several hundred people.
