Whakapapa Village

Whakapapa Village is located at the foot of the access road to Whakapapa ski field on the western side of Mount Ruapehu.

In winter, shuttle buses drive to and from the Whakapapa ski field, which has more than 30 runs, gear rental, ski schools, cafes and childcare facilities.

Whakapapa Village has great access to the Tongariro National Park which is great in summer for canoeing, white water rafting and hiking. There are also opportunities for horse riding, white-water rafting, flight seeing, canoeing and mountaineering in the village and nearby. The Whakapapa village offers affordable accommodation for everyone's needs and budgets, including camp sites.

Whakapapa Village History

The settlement is dominated by the Chateau Tongariro, a large heritage hotel that was built in 1929.
