Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. The urban area is situated on the southwestern tip of the North Island, and lies between Cook Strait and the Rimutaka Range.

Wellington is known as the windy city but it is compact, cultured and full of character and nicely placed between the harbour and the hills. The downtown area is ideal for seeing everything by foot you can easily go shopping, have a drink or two at local cafe, take any kind of transport and choose from a variety of accommodation.

All of Wellington's big attractions and landmarks are all one easily accessible area that's conveniently walkable. Visitors to the city can browse museums, historic places and galleries, including the highly acclaimed national museum Te Papa and the Beehive.

The city is truly delectable with its range of food and wine. There is never a dull moment as night time entertainment includes professional theatre, live concerts, comedy shows and dance performances.

Wellington History

European settlement started with the arrival of an advance party of the New Zealand Company on the ship Tory, on 20 September 1839, followed by 150 settlers on the Aurora on 22 January 1840. The settlers constructed their first homes at Petone, the flat area at the mouth of the Hutt River. When that became swampy and muddy they changed the plans, which had been drawn without regard for the hilly terrain.
