Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island is the second-largest island in the Hauraki Gulf of the North Island, New Zealand, it is located about just under 18 kilometres from Auckland.

Waiheke Island is a charming mix of farmland, forest, beaches, vineyards and olive groves. There is a vast variety of activities on the island including sightseeing, mountain biking, kayaking, vineyard and winery tours and heaps more.

Sightseeing on Waiheke Island is a great way to spend the day and to see the landscape and scenery of the island. Experience and visit: The sculpture parks at Connells Bay, the gardens at Te Whau, find some souvenirs and delicious food at the Ostend Market, or visit the Stony Batter gun emplacements from WWII.

In summer the beaches are a must-see and there are heaps to choose from. There are beaches with beach activities, a secluded hideaway where you can have the beach to yourself, a golden sand beach or a rocky bush clad bay.

Waiheke Island History

Discovered and settled by Maori around 1,000 years ago. The first traces of Europeans arrived with the missionary Samuel Marsden in the 1800s, a number of years after Captain Cook passed by and acknowledged the island in his travels through the Hauraki Gulf.
