Upper Hutt is a city in the Wellington region of the North Island, New Zealand. It is New Zealand's smallest city by population, but the second largest by land area.
Upper Hutt is positioned alongside forested hills next to the Hutt River. The Hutt River flows through the city but it is clean and clear enough for some excellent trout fishing. There are a heap of adventure and relaxing activities in and around Upper Hutt that focus on the striking outdoors.
The forest walkways are great for a hike and are also open to mountain bikers. The city is notorious for its parks and recreation areas, including an award-winning skate park, a wildlife park and a large aquatic fun centre. There is also an abundance of accommodation, restaurants and shopping.
Upper Hutt History
Upper Hutt is in an area originally known as Orongomai, and that of the river was Heretaunga. The first residents of the area were Maori of the Ngai Tara tribe.
