Tokoroa
TOKOROA ACTIVITIES AND TRAVEL | Tokoroa Information
Tokoroa is timber town in the Waikato region of the North Island, New Zealand. It is located 30 kilometres southwest of Rotorua, close to the foot of the Mamaku Ranges.
Tokoroa is the heart of New Zealand's massive forestry, timber and paper industries as it lies among the abundant farmland of Hamilton and Waikato and the vast plantation pine forests of the central North Island.
Visitors to the town can learn about Tokoroa's history and people by following the 'talking poles' trail through the town centre. Hunting is also very popular in the area and permits can be gained to hunt deer, possums, rabbits, pigs and goats. The many gravel and dirt forest roads around Tokoroa attract motor rally and mountain biking events.
Tokoroa History
It is traditionally recorded that a great fighting chief of the Ngati Kahupungapunga, Tokoroa by name, was killed in battle by Ngati Raukawa during the siege of Pohuturoa. It is probable that some early surveyor applied the name Tokoroa as a tribute to the old chief's memory. The name 'Tokoroa' first appeared on the early maps of the 1860s.
