Tirau is a small town in the Waikato region of the North Island, New Zealand; it located 50 kilometres southeast of Hamilton with the Kaimai ranges as a backdrop.
Tirau is used mostly for dairy farming, but there are other forms of farming such as sheep, deer, maize, horses and tree plantations. Tirau has a rage of gorgeous country gardens and home stays in the rural area, among them is the popular Oraka Deer Park.
In the town the artful side of corrugated iron is discovered. Large buildings have been made to look like a dog and a sheep. Sculptures include a pukeko, a praying mantis and a cow pushing a shopping trolley.
Tirau also has a number of charming cafes, boutique gift shops and galleries and antique shops that attract visitors all year round well as War Memorial Hall, Swimming Pool, Tennis Courts and Golf Course that keep people coming back.
Tirau History
In the 19th century, Tirau originally called Oxford was planned to be a large-scale city for the Waikato, however plans were changed after the entrepreneurial Rose family bought up great areas of land in the region. Oxford later became a rural service town, and changed its name to Tirau in 1896.
