Te Kuiti

Te Kuiti is a small town in the south of the Waikato region of the North Island, New Zealand; it is located 80 kilometres south of Hamilton.

Autumn is the best time to visit Te Kuiti as the town puts on the Te Kuiti Muster and the Running of The Sheep which is normally held the weekend after Easter each year. In the town you can participate and watch shearing contests, sheep races and more on top of that you can view Maori culture groups performing.

Te Kuiti is also a good start for exploring the Waitomo Caves area and other scenic spots such as the Tatsuno Japanese Garden, Te Kuiti lookout and Mangaokewa Scenic Reserve. Another must-see by arrangement is the Maori meeting house Tokanganui-a-Noho which is skilfully and superbly carved.

Te Kuiti History

Te Kuiti is the Maori for the area. In its original form of "Te Kuititanga", it literally means "the valley", "the squeezing in" or "the narrowing".
