Te Awamutu

Te Awamutu is a small town in the Waikato region of the North Island, New Zealand. Te Awamutu is located 30 kilometres south of Hamilton.

Te Awamutu is known as the 'Rose Capital of New Zealand'. During November to April it is the blooming season and the garden next to the visitor centre is absolutely stunning as 2000 rose bushes turn on the charm.

Te Awamutu also has an outstanding museum, with a large collection of Maori treasures and stories from the Waikato land wars. There is also a display about local music heroes Tim and Neil Finn from the Split Enz and Crowed House.

Nearby at Wharepapa South area is rock climbers dream. But for those not ready to climb there is a number of amazing walking tracks around Te Awamutu including Pirongia Forest Park.

Te Awamutu History

Te Awamutu was originally settled by Tainui Maori in the 14th century. The first European missionaries visited the town in 1834. A missionary settlement was set up by the missionaries and Maori Christians in 1839 after they observed Tainui warriors who had been fighting at Rotorua, return with 60 backpacks of human remains and proceed to cook and eat them in the Otawhao Pa.
