Te Aroha is a rural town in the Waikato region of the North Island, New Zealand, it is 53 kilometres northeast of Hamilton, and it sits at the base of Mount Te Aroha, which is the tallest peak in the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park.
Te Aroha has many attractions worth seeing from the historic buildings and monuments of the town dating back to the early 1880s to the domain, which has a variety of hot pools for bathing with lavish spa treatments and the world's only hot soda water geyser.
Other attractions visitors to Te Aroha will enjoy include the Cadman House Museum (New Zealand's first sanatorium) and the oldest pipe organ in the southern hemisphere. There is also hiking tracks up Mount Te Aroha or check out arts and crafts in the area.
Te Aroha History
The name Te Aroha comes from the Maori name of Mount Te Aroha. In one version, Rahiri, the mythical ancestor of Ngati Rahiri Tumutumu, climbed the mountain and saw his homeland in the distance and felt a sense of love for it. The name is often translated in English as the "place of love".
