Taupo

Taupo is a popular resort town on the shore of New Zealand's largest lake, Lake Taupo in the middle of the North Island, New Zealand.

The prevailing beauty of the volcanic landscape that surrounds Taupo provides a dramatic backdrop to the town and any activities you do. Taupo activities include fishing, boating, walking, white water rafting and jet boating.

Highlights around Taupo include the Tongariro National Park, the Orakei Korako Geyserland, the mighty Waikato River, Turangi (the North Island's trout fishing capital) and the remarkable Huka Falls.

The lakeside town provides a base for visitors who love to fish for trout, ski Mount Ruapehu and explore the local geothermal phenomena. Popular Taupo experiences include geothermal walks, a prawn farm, lake cruises and guided kayak expeditions to see the rock carvings at Mine Bay.

The well laid out streets of Taupo are designed to create a village feel and they are lined with cafes and great shops. At night the bars, restaurants and cafes are a popular place to visit and lakeside dining is an admired feature of warm summer evenings. Taupo also has plenty of accommodation including luxury lodges, hotels, motels and camping grounds.

Taupo History

Lake Taupo was the result of huge volcanic eruptions. Several hundred years later Nagtoroirangi brought his people to settle the land. They struggled with the harsh climate and unfertile soil for many years until the European settlers began to arrive in the 1800's. Taupo itself was first built in 1869, but did not flourish until much later in the 1950s after the soil had been cleared and fertilised.
