Taumarunui

Taumarunui is largest town in the Ruapehu District in the centre of the North Island, New Zealand. It is located is around 2.5 hours from Hamilton and less than an hour west of Turangi.

Taumarunui is known for its farming, railway history, trout fishing, gardens, weaving and a golf course which is listed in the New Zealand's top 50.

The town is a gorgeous area with great weather and an array of terrain, flora, bird life and history. There are plenty of places to have a picnic or take a short walk such as the bush, waterfalls, lakes, mountains and rivers of Taumarunui and its surroundings.

Located at the intersection of the Whanganui and Ongarue Rivers, Taumarunui is the perfect launching point for canoe trips into the Whanganui National Park. In winter, the town is an affordable place to stay if you want to ski Whakapapa on Mount Ruapehu. Taumarunui also has a broad range of shops and services and a tasty selection of eating places.

Taumarunui was originally a Maori settlement at the junction of the Ongarue River with the Whanganui, important canoe routes linked the interior of the island with the lower Whanganui River settlements.
