Rotorua

Rotorua is a city in the heart of the North Island in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand.

In Rotorua there is so many relaxing, adventurous and cultural activities to experience such as: geothermal spots, spa rejuvenation, 16 natural lakes, mountain biking trails, trout fishing and numerous forest walking tracks.

Rotorua has been voted New Zealand's most beautiful city six times as it is a geothermal paradise and you instantly feel like you have entered another world. In the city hot steam escapes from cracks in the road, back yards come with their own natural mineral hot pool and the strong aroma of sulphur fills the air. Rotorua keeps its small town appeal but is still one of the nation's most popular tourist destinations.

A visit to the local museum located within the famous Rotorua Bath House is a must. It will educate and fascinate you with its wide Maori heritage collections. Deepen your knowledge and be inspired by the Spirit of the Maori people and learn why the Arawa, the Maori of Rotorua, began the tradition of the cultural guides in New Zealand, giving the right of visiting some of the natural wonders of their homeland to the first Europeans here.

Rotorua Maori Evening

The area's mild climate, combined with the varied landscape of forests, mountains, rivers and lakes, make Rotorua a top travel destination and residential area.

Rotorua History

The area was at first settled by Maori of the Te Arawa tribe. The first European in the area was probably Phillip Tapsell who was trading from the Bay of Plenty coast at Maketu from 1828. He later married into Te Arawa and became highly regarded by them. Rotorua was established as a borough in 1922 and declared a city in 1962 before becoming a District in 1979.
