Rawene

Rawene is a historic town on the south side of the Hokianga harbour, in the Northland region of the North Island, New Zealand.

Rawene has warm climate and rich kauri forests which attracted some of New Zealand's first European settlers. The historic town of Rawene has a group of heritage buildings from this time such as Clendon House, built in the 1860s, the Masonic Hotel, from 1875, the Methodist Church, 1876 and the courthouse, which was built in 1875.

Rawene is not old-fashioned at the slightest; there are a lot modern aspects to the town, such as excellent espresso, gourmet pizza and contemporary art. Visitors enjoy taking a stroll on the mangrove walkway, which was built on the site of a century-old timber mill and box factory, this walk offers an interesting view of a wetland habitat. A ferry service runs between Rawene and Kohukohu, making it possible to explore the other side of the Hokianga Harbour.

There is a lot of accommodation available visitors can stay in the Masonic Hotel which doubles as a brilliant old pub, or at the Motor Camp/Motel, which has the most beautiful outlook of such places in New Zealand. There are also comfortable home stays, some in houses with a remarkable history.

Rawene History

Rawene started as a timber centre, with a mill and shipyards established in the early 19th century. An attempted settlement by the first New Zealand Company in 1826 failed.
