Rakino Island is a rough, mountainous island in the Hauraki Gulf of the North Island, New Zealand it is located 60 minutes from Auckland city.
Rakino Island has a small resident population but many tourists visit over summer. The island is easily accessible by ferry from Auckland. Visitors come to this unique location because of the crystal clear waters around the island. Yachts and boats enjoy anchoring in spots at Pohutukawa, Woody and West Bays.
There are many public bays and beaches in and around the island. The two most popular bays have public access, but there are smaller bays and beaches without public access. The public wharf is at the south end of Sandy Bay, and a barge access ramp is at the western end of Sanford Way in Home Bay.
The island is mostly in land with small sections of coastal pohutukawa. Residents love the isolation and solitude, and visitors enjoy the relaxing atmosphere.
Rakino Island History
Governor of New Zealand, Sir George Grey purchased Rakino in 1862. He ordered trees and started building a house in Home Bay but it lost significance when Kawau Island was obtainable.
