Patea

Patea is a town in South Taranaki in the North Island of New Zealand. It is located 61 kilometres north-west of Wanganui, on the western bank of the Patea River.

Patea has a rich European and Maori history. The Historic buildings of the city are very popular with visitors and include; the Aotea Memorial Waka, St George's Anglican Church and the building that houses the South Taranaki District Museum. The museum is a very significant archive for the South Taranaki district.

Patea is also the residence of the wonderful Patea Maori Club, whose 80s hit Poi-E, is still one of New Zealand's popular songs. Another popular spots include nearby Carlyle Beach and Mana Bay which are great for fishing, surfing and swimming.

Patea History

Patea was originally closer to the Patea River mouth than where it stands today. During the New Zealand land wars Patea was a crucial military settlement. General Cameron's force arrived at the river mouth on 15 January 1865 and made redoubts on both sides of the river.
