Paihia

Paihia is a bustling seaside town in the Bay of Islands in the far north of the North Island, New Zealand. It is close to Russell and Kerikeri and 60 kilometres north of Whangarei.

Paihia is a fantastic place to start exploring the Bay of Islands and is proud to be known as 'the Jewel of the Bay of Islands'. From the wharf of Paihia you can arrange a trip to many of the outer islands. Paihia is near the historic Treaty House at Waitangi, which marks the beginning of New Zealand as a nation and just west of Paihia is the spectacular Haruru Falls where there is an impressive waterfall and a boardwalk.

In Paihia the options are endless! You can swim with the dolphins, go kayaking or swimming and enjoy a relaxing picnic along the sheltered beaches. Learn about early New Zealand history and discover real Maori culture. From Paihia take a cruise through the famous 'Hole in the Rock', take a bus tour to Tane Mahuta or go further north to Cape Reinga.

The food is great and there is accommodation to suit everybody. Northland's subtropical climate ensures that summers are warm and an average temperature range of 10°C to 16°C in winter. This makes the wonderful golden beaches of Paihia safe for swimming and sun bathing all year round.

Paihia History

Missionary Henry Williams settled in Paihia in 1823. His brother William Williams joined him in 1826. Bishop William Grant Broughton visited the Paihia mission in 1838 and performed several firsts in New Zealand including the first Confirmation and Ordination ceremonies.
