Otaki
OTAKI ACTIVITIES AND TRAVEL | Otaki Information
Otaki is a rural service town in the Kapiti Coast District of the North Island of New Zealand; it is located half way between Wellington and Palmerston North.
Otaki's main attraction is its close distance to the walkways of the Tararua Ranges and Otaki Forks where you can have a picnic, go swimming and stay overnight at one of the camping areas.
Hiking tracks are also a lot of fun and range from 30 minute strolls to multi-day journeys. Visitors also must see Otaki Beach which is wide and windswept and fantastic place for a stimulating run or walk. The town also has a lot of Maori history and there are numerous marae in and around Otaki, as well as a Maori college.
Otaki History
In the early 19th century, the area was inhabited by Māori of the Ngati Raukawa iwi who had migrated from the Kawhia area from about 1819, under the leadership of Te Rauparaha. They had succeeded the Rangitane and Muaupoko people.
