Opunake

Opunake is a significant town on the southwest coast of Taranaki of the North Island, New Zealand; it is located 45 kilometres southwest of New Plymouth.

Opunake is located on 'Surf Highway 45'; Opunake has a wonderful curved beach, patrolled beach and a pleasant neighbourhood which attracts many holiday-makers.

If you choose to stay overnight options include some great motel and backpacker accommodation. Another popular place to stay is the beach-front camping ground that reaches capacity over summer.

Visitors should also experience the Opunake Walkway, Lake Opunake, the historic Armed Constabulary Cemetery, Waiaua River Mouth and historic Te Namu Pa. Opunake has a shopping centre and a nice selection of cafes and fish and chip shops.

Opunake has several fascinating murals and a community-owned cinema with regular screenings of the latest films. Another place to visit is The Soap Factory which is open to the public and manufactures natural bio-friendly soap specialty gift products.

Opunake History

Until the late 1800's, the Opunake area was a remote area and access was mainly by sea.  In 1891, a jetty was built on the northwest headland of Opunake Beach to push the development as the main port of Taranaki.  The jetty was destroyed by stormy seas and a second wharf (the remains of which can be seen today) was created.  The heavy seas made securing boats difficult and the wharf was closed in the 1920's. The sea conditions did not hamper the flax industry which favoured the coastal location.
