Omapere/Opononi

Opononi and its twin settlement Omapere are located on the south shore of the Hokianga harbour in Northland Region, New Zealand. State Highway 12 runs through Opononi and Omapere lies to the south.

They provide a taste of beachside living in the heart of the Hokianga. There is a great choice of places to stay, from motels and beachfront units to private holiday cottages that can be rented for almost any period of time.

There is also some great restaurants and cafes sprinkled around both the towns with great views of the beach. A sand beach spans all the way to Opononi Wharf, where you can catch a water taxi to the massive sand dunes on the other side of the harbour.

Opononi Beach
Dune surfing on body boards is an exciting thrill that leaves you sandy but extremely satisfied. Fishing trips can also be arranged at the wharf. Opononi was made famous in the mid 1950s by the tame dolphin Opo, who used to let children ride on his back.

Omapere/Opononi History

According to Te Tai Tokerau tradition, Kupe, the legendary Polynesian navigator and explorer, settled in Hokianga in approximately 925 AD, after his journey of discovery from Hawaiki aboard the waka named Matahorua. When he left Hokianga he declared that this would be the place of his return and left several things behind including the bailer of his canoe. Later, Kupe's grandson Nukutawhiti returned from Hawaiki to settle in Hokianga.
