Okaihau is a small town in the Northland Region of New Zealand's North Island, just north of Kaikohe, Located on the western side of Lake Omapere.
The town has a helpful variety of shops and services such as a hotel and a golf course. Okaihau's main attraction is a fire service museum with a large collection of vehicles, uniforms, photographs and memorabilia. From Okaihau you can follow Horeke Road to see the Wairere Boulders, a captivating nature park where huge basalt rocks have filled the valley.
Okaihau History
The township of Okaihau was established in 1862 when a group of Canadian settlers began clearing land in the area. Gum diggers arrived in the area in 1890 and Okaihau got extreme busy in the 1920's when the town was the headquarters for building the railway line northward.
