Murupara

Murupara is a timber town located in an isolated part of the Bay of Plenty in the North Island of New Zealand. It is 65 kilometres southeast of Rotorua between the Kaingaroa Forest and Te Urewera National Park, on the banks of the Rangitaiki River.

Murupara is very close to the Kaingaroa Forest which is the largest forest in the North Island of New Zealand, and the largest plantation in the southern hemisphere.

Murupara has a higher percentage of Maori population than most towns; with four marae in the area, it's a good location to learn about the Maori culture and their way of life. Hiking, hunting and fishing activities are also great to do while in area and so accessible with the Te Urewera National Park and Whirinaki Forest Park so close.

Murupara History

In the early 1900s, the planting of exotic trees began on the surrounding land of Murupara. This area is now known as the Kaingaroa Forest, with 1,400 square kilometres of planted pines.
