Matamata

Matamata is a rural Waikato town in New Zealand. It is located near the base of the Kaimai Ranges.

Matamata is renowned for its, dairy farming, thoroughbred industry and the Firth Tower Museum. There are a range of walking and tramping tracks available as well as golf courses, a selection of cafes and accommodation choices.

Matamata also has a number of excellent farmstays and farm tours available and just east you can discover Wairere Falls, the North Island's highest waterfalls, which are a brilliant sight. The walking track for Wairere Falls allows you to explore a variety of natural scenery and see the views of the Waikato Plains.

Hobbit Holes  
One of Matamatas local farms became the setting for "the Shire" in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Visitors can tour the Hobbiton Movie Set, including the hobbit holes.There are spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges from the rolling green hills of the movie set, which is still a working sheep and beef farm.

Matamata History

Matamata translates to 'headland'. This was the name of a new pa established in 1830 by Te Waharoa, the prominent Ngatihaua chief.
