Masterton is the largest town in the Wairarapa, in the North Island of New Zealand. It is 100 kilometres north-east of Wellington and 28 kilometres south of Eketahuna.
Masterton attracts a lot of visitors and top shearers from all over the country especially in March as it hosts the annual Golden Shears shearing competition.
Masterton has been a service centre for farmers, but today its immediacy to the Wairarapa wine industry is steadily changing the character and popularity of the town.
There is plenty to see and do in Masterton, discover New Zealand's rarest birds at Mt Bruce National Wildlife Centre, or watch seals at Cape Palliser. There is plenty of adventure on offer such as jet boating, hot air ballooning, fishing and surfing.
Tourists like to visit Queen Elizabeth Park to enjoy the stunning gardens and landscape. Masterton also has a bird aviary, deer park and swimming pool complex and just east of the town lays Castle Point, a protected surf beach where you can swim and have a chance to walk on the many walking tracks.
