Marton
MARTON ACTIVITIES AND TRAVEL | Marton Information
Marton is the largest town in the Rangitikei district; it has all the shops and services you would expect of a rural centre. Rangitikei residents have been involved with sheep, cattle and deer farming.
Every summer visitors come to find their way around the maize maze, which is cut into 6 hectares (12 acres) of countryside. The maze takes about 45 minutes to complete and has over eight kilometres of paths. Marton has many fine heritage homesteads; if you enjoy creative outdoor scenery, there are beautiful inspirational gardens to visit in the area.
Marton History
The town of Marton started as a private township in 1866, when shop and housing sections were sold at auction by local land owners.
For three years the small village was called Tutaenui, named after the stream running through its centre. In 1869 locals changed the name to Marton to honour the home village of Captain Cook in Yorkshire, marking his landing in New Zealand precisely 100 years earlier.
