Levin

Levin is a town in the Manawatu-Wanganui region of the North Island New Zealand; and is the largest town in the Horowhenua district, located just 90 kilometres north of Wellington.

There are many things to see and do in Levin, enjoy walks and bird watching at Papaitonga Scenic Reserve, visit the De Molen windmill at nearby Foxton, enjoy Lake Horowhenua and its surrounding wetlands, follow the Nature Coast Bird Trail for some great bird watching and escape to the coast for a day on one of the local beaches.

Levin has the Tasman Sea coast on one side and the Tararua Ranges on the other, which allows a wide range of outdoor adventures. Lake Horowhenua, a dune lake, is a popular rowing and yachting venue. To the south, Lake Papaitonga has historic associations with the important Maori chief Te Rauparaha. A short walk south is Waitarere Beach, just north-east of Levin, you'll encounter the rusting remains of the sailing ship Hydrabad, which was blown ashore in 1878.

Levin History

The town was named after William Hort Levin, the director of the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company. The Levin district was one of the last in the area to be opened to Pakeha settlement, but by the 1880s the Wellington–Manawatu railway had been built.
