Kohukohu

Kohukohu is an historic village on the Hokianga Harbour in Northland region of the North Island, New Zealand. It is situated on the northern shore of the harbour where it splits into two rivers, the Mangamuka River branching inland to the northeast and the Waihou River leading towards the east past Mangungu, Horeke and Rangiahua.

In the days of kauri milling Kohukohu was once the largest town on the Hokianga Harbour, there's still plenty of history to see around the streets such as heritage villas, the Masonic Lodge, the Anglican Church, a police station and an old school.

Kohukohu has many great spots to see; the water's edge cafe is a fantastic location to visit, especially at full tide. For a bit of fun hire a kayak or test your luck fishing off the nearby wharf.

Kohukohu's residents, buildings, stunning scenery and landscape make it a perfect place to be grateful for the affection and charm of a small New Zealand town. Kohukohu is around one hour's drive from many major tourist attractions such as the Bay of Islands, 90 Mile Beach and Tane Mahuta, which makes it the perfect base to explore the Northland Region.

Kohukohu History

The first recorded European to enter the Hokianga Harbour arrived in 1819. By the 1830's the area was the heart of New Zealand's timber industry, the harbour was a busy port with often seven vessels tied up at once.
