Kawhia

Kawhia is a coastal village situated in the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island; it is 40 kilometres southwest of Hamilton.

Kawhia is a relaxing holiday destination and great a fishing spot. It's a very affordable location for visitors with cheap accommodation and experiences. Kawhia's biggest tourist hot spots are the Kawhia Harbour and Ocean Beach.

Kawhia Harbour covers more than 550 square metres and in many places, when the tide is out you can see and pick up pipis, oysters, mussels, cockles and mud snails. When the tide is in the harbour is a huge spread of water, and its arms and estuaries are accessible to a variety of small boats which often explore the scenic shorelines.

At Ocean Beach at low tide you can dig your own bath as geothermally heated water bubbles come up through the black sand. It is also a great destination for surfers. Another great thing to do while in Kawhia is the walk to Maketu Marae, where two stones mark the burial place of the Tainui canoe.

Kawhia History

The harbour area was the birthplace of the well-known Maori warrior chief Te Rauparaha, and is known in Maori lore as the final resting-place of the ancestral waka, Tainui.
