Great Barrier Island is the fourth largest island of New Zealand which is located just over 90 kilometres north-east of central Auckland in the outer Hauraki Gulf.
Great Barrier Island is one of the most natural places in New Zealand where there is an array of activities available such as tramping through native forest, kayaking, walking tracks, fishing, boating, horse riding, golf and bird watching. There is also a huge range tours available which are an excellent way to learn more about the island.
Mt Hirakimata is the highest peak of the island at 621m and is nestled on the west coast of the island there you will find steep, forest covered ranges. On the opposite side of the island there are fantastic white sand beaches, tidal creeks and wetlands.
Great Barrier Island has an impressive landscape and scenery which is abundant with a variety of plant life and birds. View the regenerating forest of native trees, the historic remnants of a kauri dam and enjoy the innate beauty along with panoramic views.
Wander around the island on an assortment of walking tracks that are available from a short walk to see a waterfall to the longer walk to the highest most point of the island. This is a one-of-a-kind and intimate island where you will find tranquillity, peace and a lot of fun.
Great Barrier Island History
Great Barrier Island was named by Captain Cook who first sighted the island whilst sailing, on the Endeavour, up from the Firth of Thames and crossing the Hauraki Gulf in 1769. Aotea is the Maori name for the island.
