Feilding is a town in the Manawatu-Wanganui Region of the North Island of New Zealand. It is located 20 kilometres north of Palmerston North.
Feilding is renowned for its beautiful gardens. The town has won the Most Beautiful Town award 13 times. Many heritage homes with beautiful gardens are open for the public to enjoy, and garden tours can be organised through the Information Centre.
Feilding is also a town of history and collectors you can visit private museums featuring vintage motorcycles, farm equipment, horse drawn conveyances and various kinds of rail transportation.
There is also an excellent selection of crafts in natural wools, pottery, ceramics, glass blowing, knitwear and wood, along with antiques, scattered throughout the town which are a visitor's delight. The coastal beaches offer good fishing, and swimming within patrolled areas.
Feilding History
The town was named after Colonel William Henry Adelbert Feilding, a director of the Emigrants and Colonists Aid Corporation Ltd. He negotiated the purchase of a 100,000 acre block of land from the Wellington provincial government in 1871. The first settlers arrived from Great Britain on 22 January 1874.
